September 9, 2014, In Liberty Township, Michigan, on U.S. 127, two women in a Ford Focus were killed in an accident involving an out of control semi-truck. The truck was carrying a load of sand traveling north. Not paying attention and unable to stop, the truck tried to avoid colliding into the back of the Focus. The truck flipped, pushing the car into the intersection where it was hit by another car, a 2009 Hyundai. The women in the Focus were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The truck driver and person driving the Hyundai were taken to the Allegiance Health hospital with non-life-threatening conditions. The crash is still under investigation; it is unknown whether alcohol was a contributing factor. U.S. 127 was closed for 8 hours following the crash.
