What are the Michigan Civil Rights Laws?

The Elliot-Larson Civil Rights Act is a Michigan law that prohibits discrimination based on a disability, race, color, national origin, age, sex, or marital status; and, in certain circumstances, based on height, weight, or an arrest record. Discrimination is prohibited in:

  • Employment;
  • Housing;
  • Public accommodations; and
  • Voting.

The complexity of these claims generally makes them quite expensive to litigate.  Therefore, it is important that only an experienced litigator recognize the strength or weakness of your claim as early as possible.  We pass on questionable claims in order to avoid wasting your valuable time and money.

What are examples of Michigan civil rights violations?

  • Your employer refusing to promote you because you’re a woman
  • Denied employment because you’re pregnant
  • Sexual harassment
  • Employment discrimination because of a wheelchair or cane
  • Housing discrimination
  • Denied tenancy because you require a seeing eye dog
  • Being wrongfully evicted because of a new child
